On the way above the roofs of Innsbruck

Enjoying the panoramic view, escaping the hustle and bustle and still getting that city feeling – that was my intention when I set out to visit Innsbruck’s most beautiful vantage points in one day.

The ideal start for me was the Bergisel Sky restaurant, located in the 50-meter tower of the famous Bergisel ski jump in the south of the city. Just entering the ski jump stadium brings you closer to the Olympic flair of Innsbruck and the imposing architecture of the modern sports facility, newly built in 2002, is really worth seeing. After a delicious breakfast in the Bergisel Sky, which is glazed all around, I visited the roof terrace on the last floor of the sports complex. Up here, I once again enjoyed the excellent view of Innsbruck, the Inn Valley and the Nordkette in the open air and in peace. As a local, I simply enjoy such moments far too rarely…

Inspired by the morning mood of the city, my route continued towards the city center. Straight ahead, past the Graßmayr bell foundry, through the Triumphpforte, along Maria-Theresien-Straße – and after a leisurely stroll I reached the city centre.

In a mood to move, I decided to climb the 51-meter-high city tower in the heart of the old town. Through a narrow, quite adventurous staircase with 148 steps inside the historic building, one quickly reaches the observation deck at a height of 31 meters. The narrow level around the tower is not for the faint-hearted, but it does provide a good view of the old town with the Goldenes Dachl from above. In addition, you have the entire mountain panorama of the provincial capital in view and also the previously visited Bergiselschanze can now be marvelled at from afar…

Ready for a short breather, I visited Cafe 360° on the 7th floor of the Rathausgalerien, in keeping with the day’s motto “On the way above the rooftops of Innsbruck”. The round café with high glass fronts and 360° balcony lives up to its name – tranquillity from the hustle and bustle of the city and a cosy break with a good view of the city’s rooftops are guaranteed. When hunger pangs arise, you can easily switch to the Lichtblick restaurant opposite – for a lunch break, no wishes are left unfulfilled here.

If you want to go even higher, you can do so and visit the recently opened viewing platform of the town hall with a 360-degree view. The so-called Campanile on the top floor is glazed and roofed and therefore a good, free alternative to the city tower in bad weather.

After a stroll around town, I was ready for another stop with a view. In my opinion, an absolute view highlight of Innsbruck is the aDLERS Restaurant&Bar – a must for my city tour “above the rooftops of Innsbruck”. On the 12th floor of Innsbruck’s highest hotel, this modernly furnished restaurant with terrace is located. From here you have a unique view over the entire city area and the surrounding mountain landscape.

If you don’t feel like a longer stopover, but still don’t want to miss the unique panorama, you can take the lift directly to the 13th floor, to the roof terrace of the hotel building, every day from 09:00 to 18:00, and let Innsbruck work its magic on you with free admission.

But I still had a drink at the bar and ended the day “above the roofs of Innsbruck” satisfied and relaxed. Definitely recommendable 🙂

If you want to climb a little higher, you can take the Hungerburgbahn to one of Innsbruck’s most beautiful viewing platforms. From there you can continue directly by train or, for the more athletic, on foot towards the Hafelekar. The panorama at over 2000m is unforgettable and a must for all Innsbruck fans.
