Get out of the dusty den, watching movies alone has come to an end! The cinemas are back and not only that, there's a great film festival season waiting for you. From funny to exciting to thought-provoking and political, there's something for everyone.
The wait is over, finally cinema again! After what feels like an eternity, the cinemas are opening their doors. In addition to the "normal" program, a few special highlights await you this summer and fall. I'm sure there's something for everyone. You can find an overview of the film festivals here:
TOGETHER IN THE MOUNTAINS
The Innsbruck festival summer kicked off at the Alpine Film Festival at the Leokino. This year the focus was not on athletic feats, but on cohesion. "I am of course aware of the risk of a film tour that focuses on responsibility and solidarity instead of adrenaline and heroism. But with my strong team and the companies that believe in the project, I set off full of optimism. Our partners, the cinema operators, are real adventurers who won't be shaken so easily," Sandra Freudenberg, the festival director, is convinced.
If you missed the festival in Innsbruck, you still have the chance to see it elsewhere. You can find the other dates here.
USELESS AND BEAUTIFUL - WACKY CINEMA MEETS WEIRD HUMOR
It certainly won't be boring at the DIAMETRALE Film festival will certainly not be boring. Under the proven motto "useless and beautiful", film, theory and music will be combined, which wittily undermine and question the traditional. Everyday logics are to be suspended by means of a diverse flood of images, and art, life and coexistence are to be rethought. Experiment and humour are the DIAMETRALE's weapons of choice against dusty visions, worn-out film clichés and rigid social conventions.
The DIAMETRALE takes place from 14 - 18 July 2021 and celebrates a half-round birthday - its fifth anniversary. This year 41 films (31 of them short films) will be shown, each of which will be framed by two concerts and two lectures. For all impatient people who don't want to wait that long, I have good news: on 30.06. there will be a little warm-up. A surprise film will be shown. What do you mean, no info? Exactly! So we can stay curious.
"POWER AND FRAUD" - CORRUPTION KILLS
Corona has thrown a spanner in the works. Many private as well as public events had to be postponed. Also the PolitFilmFestivalwhich should have taken place in April, was not spared. But as the saying goes: "There are two sides to everything. That is the good of the bad and the bad of the good." Thanks to the time gained, further preparations can be made, plans made and specials prepared for the summer. The PolitFilmFestival will now take place under the motto "Power and Deception", probably from 13 - 15.09.2021 at the Leokino in Innsbruck.
But there is also a treat for those who don't want to wait that long. The outdoor special will take place on 23.07. at the Rapoldipark in Innsbruck. The entrance is free, there will be enough seats to keep the distance and drinks, but you have to bring your own blankets and whatever else you need.
I must honestly say that I am particularly excited about this special. The film "Collective - Corruption Kills " by Alexander Nanau will be shown. Using Romania as an example, it shows how devastating the effects of a corrupt healthcare system can be. In the subsequent discussion, experts will have their say and bring this topic to Tyrol.
INTERNATIONAL PEARLS IN DOMESTIC CINEMAS
The fourth largest film festival in Austria - the IFFI-InternationalFilm Festival Innsbruck - had to be postponed from spring to autumn and will now take place from October 5-10, 2021. Doesn't matter, so we have more time to look forward to it. During the six days of the festival, the cinemas of the Leokino and the Cinematograph will be filled with current films from the global festival circuit as well as film-historical gems.
All those who don't want to go to the cinema - for whatever reason - can rejoice, because the IFFI is planned as a hybrid film festival again this year. Films will be shown at Leokino & Cinematograph, but a selection of the program is also streamable on iffi.at.
By the way, some of the other festivals also offer streams, so check out their respective websites.
Silent cinema fun
What's as much a part of summer as chocolate sauce on a banana split? Outdoor cinema! A super great concept that I honestly didn't know before, although it's been around for a while, is the "Silent Cinema". With the name you can already guess what it's all about: The event cinema "Silent Cinema" tours through the whole of Austria and also makes several stops in Innsbruck. Every spectator gets headphones, so he can listen to the film at the volume and in the language he wants - cinema without annoying noise. Films from all kinds of film genres are shown. Whether comedy, drama, action film or romance - at "Silent Cinema" there is something for every taste. The audience decides which film will be shown 10 days in advance by voting. The film with the most votes wins and will be played at the respective event.
OPEN-AIR CINEMA IN THE ZEUGHAUS
Last but not least, the classic: The Open-air cinema in the Zeughaus will (in all probability) take place again this August as usual. For more than 25 years it has been a fixed part of Innsbruck's cultural summer programme. Film lovers have spent many balmy evenings under the stars here, in the historic ambience of Emperor Maximilian's former armoury. Unfortunately, there is no more detailed information at the moment, so it's best to keep up to date on the homepage of the Leokino.
We've waited long enough, but now it's finally starting again! We are looking forward to a cinema summer full of delicacies and great festivals in the cinemas of Innsbruck!
